Kenyan President William Ruto has stated that he won’t sign into law a finance bill proposing new taxes, a day after several protesters were shot dead.
Kenyans took to the streets to protest the government’s plan to increase taxes, arguing that it would further strain their finances at a time when many are already struggling to make ends meet.
Mr Ruto had previously described the protesters’ actions as “treasonous,” prompting the government to deploy soldiers to disperse them.
In refusing to approve the proposed legislation, Ruto cited widespread public dissatisfaction and acknowledged that he has listened and conceded to these concerns.
He also addressed the tragic deaths during the protests, describing the situation as unfortunate, and extended his condolences.
