Chief Muraino Akanbi Taiwo, a member of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC), has described the decision of lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly to reconvene during recess as illegal.
Lawmakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly reconvened on 13 January 2025 while the House was on recess to impeach the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who was away in the United States.
The lawmakers installed Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the new Speaker of the House.
At the weekend, Obasa addressed his supporters in Lagos and declared that he was still the speaker, as his removal was illegal and did not follow due process.
Members of the GAC have expressed diverse views about Obasa’s removal from office.
However, in a statement released on Monday and signed by him, Taiwo criticised the move, stating that it reflects “total disregard and clear disrespect for the leadership of the party.”
He acknowledged the division within the GAC leadership regarding the matter but expressed confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he referred to as the party’s de facto leader, to provide a resolution to the ongoing crisis.
“The act of the lawmakers to reconvene during the recess is illegal. It shows total disregard and clear disrespect for the leadership of the party,” Taiwo said.
“The GAC leadership is split over the matter, but we will all defer to the final decision of our de facto leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to resolve the crisis,” he added.
The ongoing developments in the Lagos State Assembly have stirred debate among political stakeholders, raising concerns about adherence to due process and party unity.
