The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) is setting its sights firmly for the 2027 elections after a successful 2025 elective National Convention held on Tuesday night at the RockView Hotel in Apapa, Lagos.
This pivotal event marked a significant step in the party’s efforts to strengthen its structure and leadership.
New Leadership Elected
Dr. Agbo Major was elected as the new National Chairman, leading a refreshed National Working Committee (NWC). Other key positions filled during the convention include:
- National Secretary: Mr. Oginni Olaposi
- Deputy National Chairman (South): Chief Felix Chukwurah
- National Treasurer: Mr. Adetoyese Omokanye
- Deputy National Chairman (North): Alhaji Babayo Muhammed
- National Publicity Secretary: Abdulrasaq Abdulsallam
- National Woman Leader: Hajia Aisha Kade
- National Youth Leader: Chief Edward Ofomona
- National Organizing Secretary: Omolara Johnson
The convention also saw the successful review and ratification of previous Ward, Local Government, and Zonal Congresses, which were reported to have been conducted smoothly.
Strategic Motions Adopted
During the convention, six crucial motions were adopted to enhance the party’s effectiveness, including:
- Expulsion Affirmation: A motion confirmed the expulsion of former Presidential candidate Senator Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso and Elder Buba Galadima among others.
- Automatic Qualification: Another motion granted automatic qualification for current members of the State House of Representatives, Senate, and Federal House of Representatives to contest in the upcoming 2027 elections.
The gathering was well-attended by party loyalists, members of the Board of Trustees (BoT), and the National Executive Committee (NEC), with the convention running from 9 PM until 4 AM the following morning.
Court Mandate and Repositioning
The convention followed a directive from an Abia State High Court on November 1, 2024, which mandated the NNPP’s BoT, led by Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, to restructure the party from the ward level up to the national level.
This restructuring aims to ensure that the party is recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and is prepared for future electoral challenges.
Dr. Aniebonam emphasized the importance of capable leadership, warning against accepting responsibilities that individuals cannot manage and underscoring the party’s commitment to competence and accountability.
A Vision for Unity and Progress
In his welcome address, BoT Secretary Alhaji Mohammed Babayo reiterated the party’s commitment to unity and its vision of credible governance that prioritizes the needs of Nigerians. He called on the newly elected officials to lead with integrity and dedication, emphasizing that the path ahead requires collective effort and hard work.
Dr. Agbo Major, in his acceptance speech, called on all members, especially those who may feel aggrieved, to unite and contribute to the party’s development. He expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and his commitment to repositioning the NNPP for the upcoming elections.

The newly elected National Secretary, Mr. Sunday Oginni Olaposi, concluded the convention with a vote of thanks, urging members to remain steadfast in their support for the party. He assured them that the NNPP is more determined than ever to achieve greatness and change Nigeria’s political landscape. With this convention, the NNPP is poised for a new chapter, aiming for optimal performance as it prepares for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in 2027.
