MAJAN Visits Tin Can Island Port Command, Praises CAC Onyeka’s Innovative Reforms

The Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), led by President Jerry Aguigbo, recently visited the Tin Can Island Port Command to engage with the Command’s activities and commend the transformative measures implemented by Customs Area Controller (CAC) FO Onyeka.

During the visit, Aguigbo emphasized the strategic significance of the Tin Can Island Port in Nigeria’s maritime sector, praising CAC Onyeka for his swift and effective reforms since taking office. “Since your assumption as CAC, you have introduced measures that have resonated positively with agents and freight forwarders. We are here to learn more about your initiatives and operations,” Aguigbo remarked.

CAC Onyeka responded with a strong commitment to enhancing operational efficiency for compliant traders. He expressed his vision for the port, stating, “We aim to make Tin Can Island the most business-friendly port in the Federation.” Onyeka also addressed concerns regarding multiple alerts in the system, assuring stakeholders that efforts are underway to eliminate unnecessary alerts and streamline processes.

Deputy Comptroller S.O. Aribiyi and Deputy Comptroller IS Ofoegbu also contributed to the discussion, clarifying the issuance of the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) certificate. “The AEO is a government incentive designed to encourage compliance among traders. It is recognized internationally and involves profiling by various security agencies, including the police and NDLEA,” Aribiyi explained. He assured attendees that the program includes rigorous checks to prevent the entry of illicit goods, emphasizing that only compliant entities have received the AEO certification.

Other notable attendees included Assistant Comptroller of Enforcement UB Agomuo, Chief Superintendent of Customs Oben Ihekuama, and Customs Public Relations Officer O.E. Ivara, among others.

This visit highlighted the essential collaboration between the media and the maritime sector, underscoring the importance of transparency and effective communication in fostering growth within the industry
