The Managing Director/CEO of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, conducted an unannounced inspection of the access roads to the Lagos port, reiterating a firm zero-tolerance policy towards congestion.
During his inspection of key operational routes, Dantsoho highlighted the NPA’s dedication to ongoing improvements, stating, “These unscheduled visits will become more frequent as we strive to enhance efficiency.”
He pointed out that port managers have been instructed to promptly address concerns raised by trucking and freight forwarding stakeholders, and he will personally oversee compliance to ensure meaningful progress.
“Traffic management efficiency is a top priority for us. In addition to optimizing the electronic call-up system (ETO), we are focused on improving multimodal transport through barges and rail. We will work with the Nigeria Customs Service to relocate the scanner currently blocking the rail link in Apapa, facilitating smoother cargo movement,” he explained.
Dantsoho emphasized that the port access road is an international corridor that must remain free of traffic delays. “We will enforce accountability rigorously to prevent congestion. Automated access gates must operate effectively, and we need to streamline our standard operating procedures (SOPs) to speed up transaction turnaround times, ensuring we remain competitive regionally and globally,” he added.
During his visit, Dr. Dantsoho was welcomed by Mr. John Coumantaros, Chairman of Flour Mills Group.
