The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at the Illela Border Command in Sokoto State has announced the successful repatriation of 62 nationals from the Republic of Mali. The group, which includes 51 males and 11 females, was escorted through the Illela Control Post.
In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, Controller Mr. Tony Akuneme detailed the operation, which involved a team of eight officers led by Insp. Mamoud Sadiq. They transported the individuals from the NIS headquarters in Abuja to the Illela Border in two buses, arriving at approximately 8 PM on Friday.
Upon arrival, Akuneme instructed the Assistant Controller in charge of Human Resources, Adamu Mshelia, who also oversees the Anti-Smuggling Unit, to ensure the proper documentation of the repatriated migrants. Following standard procedures, the individuals were subsequently handed over to officers of the Niger Republic Police at the Birnin Konni control post. There, they underwent additional screening and documentation before being received by the area’s police chief, known as the Commisere.
Additionally, Akuneme highlighted ongoing construction projects at the Illela control post, which include both mega and mini Forward Operating Bases. This initiative is part of an effort led by NIS Controller-General Kemi Nandap to combat irregular migration throughout the country.
“The construction company has begun clearing land and demolishing dilapidated structures,” Akuneme noted. “We appreciate the CG for this upgrade, which reflects her commitment to addressing irregular and prohibited migration across Nigeria.”
He also reassured the public that the situation remains calm in the Illela and Tangaza areas, with military and security personnel deployed to counter any threats posed by bandits in the region.
