The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has strongly denied recent social media reports accusing it of corruption worth billions of naira. They called these claims “false and baseless,” emphasising their commitment to honesty and transparency.
In a detailed statement on Sunday, May 11, 2025, the NPA explained that all its budgets and spending are closely monitored by government bodies like the Ministry of Marine & Blue Economy, the Budget Office, and the National Assembly. This oversight makes it impossible for them to mismanage funds.
Regarding the dredging work at the Warri Escravos Channel, which is vital for Nigeria’s oil operations, the NPA clarified that the project followed official rules for emergency procurement, as laid out in Nigeria’s Procurement Act of 2007. They explained that the dredging was necessary to reduce silt buildup and avoid shipping accidents or damage to costly oil infrastructure.
The NPA also defended its purchase of ships and marine equipment. They said these were done legally and quickly to support offshore activities related to selling Nigerian crude oil in local currency, which is crucial for energy security.
On the issue of withholding documents, the NPA argued that these claims are not true. They stated that government rules require the timely processing of documents, making delays unlikely.
The Authority refuted any allegations of financial misconduct in its London office, saying no such transactions ever took place.
The NPA attributed a rise in revenue in 2024 to gains made from favourable currency exchange rates, which is common in maritime business when dealing in foreign currencies.
Regarding staff promotions and new appointments, the NPA said these were necessary due to staff of similar age stagnating in their roles. They affirmed that all processes followed proper procedures.
The Authority also explained that ending some third-party contracts was done legally and according to existing agreements.
On staff morale, the NPA stressed that they have resolved outstanding personnel issues and conducted promotion exams in 2024. They claim to have received praise from internal worker unions and that staff morale is currently high.
Looking forward, the NPA said it is working on making Nigerian ports more competitive. They recently got approval to start a Port Modernisation Programme and are implementing new systems like the Port Community System (PCS) to streamline port processes.
Finally, the NPA urged the media to verify their reports directly with the Authority, which remains open to discussions and clarifications.
