The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Seme Area Command has officially debunked circulating rumours claiming that seized rice was responsible for deaths among consumers, including a military officer.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Isah Sulaiman, on Sunday, the agency clarified that these claims are entirely false and without any basis. According to him, the rumours alleging that the Customs seized rice and distributed it without the owners’ knowledge, leading to traditional rituals and subsequent deaths, are misleading and baseless.
The Command emphasised that it strictly follows standard operating procedures (SOPS) when disposing of seized goods, ensuring transparency, legality, and adherence to established laws. No evidence or credible reports substantiate the claims that any deaths have occurred due to consuming rice associated with the NCS.
Sulaiman also criticised individuals masquerading as journalists who spread these malicious and fictitious stories, which aim to mislead the public instead of upholding their professional responsibility.
The Command urges the public to disregard this unfounded story, as spreading false information could incite unnecessary fear and tarnish the image of security agencies working hard to protect the nation.
