The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has announced that CMA CGM Nigeria Shipping Limited will stop charging container deposits for all new bookings starting May 21, 2025. This decision comes after extensive engagement with stakeholders and marks a significant milestone toward making Nigeria’s shipping sector more efficient and customer-friendly.
The NSC praises CMA CGM’s initiative, viewing it as a positive step toward reducing trade barriers, increasing compliance, and boosting port competitiveness. A recent statement from the Council highlighted that “this policy change is set to lessen the financial strain on shippers, minimise disputes over refunds, and foster further reforms in the maritime sector.”
Removing the container deposit aligns with broader industry calls for greater transparency and cost-effective practices in port operations and logistics. CMA CGM explained that the move was driven by valuable customer feedback over the years, aiming to streamline operations, simplify logistics, and improve overall service quality.
The NSC encourages other shipping lines operating in Nigeria to follow suit with similar customer-focused policies, promoting fairness, transparency, and more efficient service delivery across the industry.
