In a recent stakeholder meeting held at the Civic Centre on June 1, 2025, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State reaffirmed his commitment to support local traders amid ongoing ethnic and communal tensions in the Southeast.
During the event, Bar Uju Ihejirika, Chairperson and CEO of Britannia-U Nigeria Limited, passionately challenged Igbo leaders and urged them to take decisive action against insecurity in the region. She warned that if urgent steps are not taken by December, women and other community members might be compelled to act on their own, emphasising the urgent need for intervention.
Bar Uju also expressed concern over the disconnection from traditional heritage, citing how Igbos now hold traditional weddings and burials in Lagos, which she believes is damaging their cultural roots. “We need to go back home, our children need to visit home,” she insisted, calling for a revitalisation of ancestral ties.
A significant part of the discussion focused on the recent ethnic clashes that erupted after the 2023 elections in Lagos, which led to the destruction of Igbo shops, homes, and the Alaba International Market. The incident intensified calls for peace and unity, with stakeholders agreeing on the importance of fostering harmony.
During the Q&A session, Mr. Tony Nwakaeze, Chairman of Computer Village, raised concerns about ongoing frustrations by some Southeastern governors, who have reportedly hindered their efforts to acquire land that had already been paid for and intended for relocation.
Responding to these concerns, Governor Hope Uzodimma promised to allocate land in Imo State for the traders to facilitate their relocation plans. Though some attendees viewed Governor Hope Uzodimma’s promise as a political statement, others expressed hope that he would fulfil his pledge.
The meeting underscores the critical need for coordinated efforts among regional leaders to address insecurity, protect cultural heritage, and support economic stability for Igbo traders. As the dialogue continues, the community awaits tangible action from the government to ensure a peaceful and prosperous future for the Southeast.
