The historic struggle on June 12, 1993, stands as a timeless testament to the courage and sacrifice of those who defied tyranny in their quest for democracy. Among these brave individuals is Senator Chief Anthony Adefuye—a distinguished political leader whose extraordinary sacrifices and resilient leadership have significantly shaped Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Today, we assert an urgent and vital call: Senator Adefuye’s rightful place must be secured in the June 12 Heroes Honour List. His contributions go beyond mere participation; he was a strategic architect of Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement. His unwavering dedication saw him endure brutal persecution—his clothes torn by violent mobs during protests—yet he remained steadfast, embodying the very spirit of democratic resistance.

But Senator Adefuye’s legacy extends far beyond those tumultuous days. The historic Afenifere meetings that sparked Nigeria’s democratic resurgence were held at his Akoka, Bariga residence—a sacred ground where the blueprint for freedom was crafted. His steadfast commitment also led to his detention alongside revered leaders like Pa Adekunle Ajasin in Owo, sharing the crucible of oppression with other democratic martyrs.

Even in the face of death threats, the brutal Abacha regime repeatedly sought to silence him, recognising his formidable influence. Yet, Senator Adefuye’s indomitable spirit remained unconquered. His survival is a divine affirmation of his destined role in Nigeria’s political renaissance.

We call on President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, and the Federal Government to address this glaring omission with immediate urgency. Failing to honour heroes like Adefuye diminishes the very essence of our nation. His blood, sweat, and strategic brilliance paved the way for the democracy we enjoy today.

The time for recognition is now—justice delayed is democracy denied.
