Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has reaffirmed his support for Peter Obi’s continued political ambitions, stating that Obi is free to seek the party’s presidential ticket in the 2027 elections — with or without Baba-Ahmed as his running mate.

Baba-Ahmed shared this perspective during an appearance on The Morning Brief, a Channels Television programme, emphasising his respect for Obi. “They are two key individuals I hold in high regard; one is Peter Obi. I welcome him openly,” he said. “The Labour Party welcomes him to retain the ticket and contest in 2027 with or without me. The ADC is also free to adopt a southern candidate.”

The former senator underscored the need for leaders with genuine capacity and compassion, noting that Nigeria’s future depends on electing leaders who can deliver meaningful development rather than mere promises of governance that fail. “We want capacity. We want leaders who matter, those who will develop Nigeria and deliver on their promises,” Baba-Ahmed stated.

Addressing concerns over Obi’s recent involvement in coalition talks led by the African Democratic Congress, Baba-Ahmed clarified that such activities do not constitute anti-party actions. “This is an unfolding situation. Coalitions involve various parties, interest groups, and individuals coming together. Peter Obi is welcome to continue participating in these coalition meetings,” he asserted.

On the sensitive issue of zoning ahead of the 2027 polls, Baba-Ahmed reiterated the belief that the Southern region should produce Nigeria’s next president, aligning with the regional sentiments that influence the country’s political landscape.

In the 2023 presidential election, Obi and Baba-Ahmed ran under the Labour Party platform. Obi finished third behind the eventual winner, President Bola Tinubu, whose victory was announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

As Nigeria looks toward the 2027 elections, the political landscape remains dynamic, with key figures like Obi and Baba-Ahmed carefully positioning themselves amid ongoing coalition talks, zoning debates, and the quest for capable leadership.
