During the launch of “Discover Lagos State: A History Puzzle Book (Volume 1),” Babatunde Fashola, former Minister of Works and ex-Governor of Lagos State, issued a strong warning to the current administration led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. His concern? The ongoing street renaming initiatives across Lagos could be erasing or distorting the state’s rich historical record.

Fashola stressed the importance of understanding and preserving history as a vital component of civic pride and enlightenment. He emphasised that landmarks and street names serve not just for navigation, but as living memorials that preserve Lagos’ vibrant past. To reinforce his point, he referenced archived materials he studied at the University of Glasgow, highlighting how diligent documentation worldwide helps protect historical integrity.

Lessons from the Past: Honouring “Ladipo Oluwole”

A notable example Fashola mentioned is Dr. Isaac Ladipo Oluwole — Nigeria’s first African medical officer of health in Lagos. Studied at the University of Glasgow from 1913 to 1918, Oluwole was a trailblazer who championed health initiatives such as school vaccination programs and hygiene education. Streets named after him, like Ladipo Oluwole Street in Ikeja, stand as enduring tributes, allowing residents and visitors to connect with Lagos’ historical heroes.

The Debate on Street Names

Fashola acknowledged the heated conversations surrounding the renaming and removal of street names.
