Nigeria Wins / Secures Fifth Consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Title as South Sudan Makes Historic Medal Debut

The 2025 FIBA AfroBasket Women’s Championship, Nigeria’s D’Tigress lifted the trophy for a record fifth straight time, reaffirming their dominance on the continent. The final clash took place on Sunday, August 3rd, at the Palais des Sports Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where Nigeria overcame an early deficit to defeat Mali 78-64.

Mali got off to a strong start, ending the first quarter ahead 26-20. However, the Nigerian team responded with resilience and strategic brilliance, taking control in the subsequent quarters. Their impressive performance secured a comprehensive victory and their seventh continental title overall.

This victory also guarantees Nigeria a spot at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin, Germany. Meanwhile, Mali, along with bronze medalists South Sudan and Senegal, will participate in the qualification tournaments next March in hopes of earning their tickets to Germany.

A Historic Medal for South Sudan

Adding a historic milestone to the tournament, debutants South Sudan claimed their first-ever continental medal by winning bronze in a thrilling 66-65 victory over eleven-time champions Senegal. The Bright Starlets’ narrow win marks a significant achievement for the young nation and the first time a debutant has medaled at AfroBasket.

Senegal, who has historically been a basketball powerhouse, will have to wait at least another two years for their next chance at gold. The defeat signifies only the third time in 26 editions that Senegal has missed the podium, underscoring the emerging competitiveness of the tournament.
