The Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, says it may pursue legal action against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following a raid on the facility late Sunday night.

According to Daily Post, EFCC operatives from the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 reportedly arrived at about 2 a.m. at the OOPL premises during a Wet & Rave Splash Extravaganza at Rounda Fun Spot. The agency reportedly arrested 93 youths and seized 18 vehicles and mobile devices. A video circulating online shows attendees scrambling for safety as the raid unfolded.

EFCC, via its official X account, said the operation was based on credible intelligence regarding youths suspected of involvement in internet-related crimes.

In response, Vitalis Ortese, the Managing Director of OOPL Ventures, described the raid as an invasion of private property. In a statement to reporters, Ortese alleged that more than 50 armed men conducted the operation, fired guns, and threatened to kill attendees, causing injuries as people attempted to flee.

Ortese characterised the incident as a “Gestapo-like” intrusion, saying it disrupted a private event that had been publicly advertised for days. He also claimed that police had been informed of the operation, and that security at the gate, as well as officers from Kemta Police Station, were unaware of any EFCC operation or a warrant.

According to the OOPL statement, EFCC operatives allegedly informed management that they were acting on intelligence about a private event inside the complex. The document states that neither local police officials at the gate nor additional police from Kemta Police Station were notified about the operation, and that the EFCC group reportedly replied, “We are doing our job” when challenged.

The library’s management contends that the raid constitutes an invasion of private property and an infringement of OOPL’s rights as a corporate entity, as well as a breach of the rights of those who gathered for the event. It said an investigation into the incident is ongoing and demanded an explanation and apology from EFCC for the injuries and chaos caused.

OOPL’s management warned that it would seek redress and sanctions if an explanation and formal apology were not forthcoming. The statement also called for accountability for those injured during the incident and for clarification on the reasoning behind the raid.
