Residents of Abakaliki are expressing deep concern following a frightening armed robbery that occurred on Tuesday evening—a stark reminder of the growing insecurity in the area.

According to reports circulating on social media, the attack took place at approximately 8:27 p.m. while a commuter was riding home on his motorcycle. The victim was intercepted by two men riding another motorcycle, who quickly ordered him to stop, hand over his phone, and surrender his bike keys.

During the confrontation, one of the attackers reportedly brandished a locally made pistol. In a desperate attempt to deter them, the rider identified himself as a police officer. Instead of backing off, the assailants engaged him in a struggle, during which a shot was fired—missing the victim by inches.

As the attackers attempted to reload, the rider seized the chance to escape. A second gunshot rang out as he sped away, causing him to lose control and veer into a gutter. He later sought medical attention, where doctors confirmed he had sustained multiple pellet wounds to the chest, back, and right arm. Thankfully, his vital organs were not affected, though surgery is required to remove the pellets.

So far, no official statement has been issued by security agencies. However, local authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant—especially at night—and to promptly report any suspicious activity.

The victim described the ordeal as “horrific” and expressed gratitude for surviving the encounter. He requested prayers for a full recovery as he undergoes further treatment.
