Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered a full investigation into the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, following allegations of medical negligence at a private hospital in Lagos.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Lagos State Government confirmed that it received a detailed account from Adichie about the circumstances surrounding her son’s death on January 6 after a brief illness.

The statement, signed by the Special Adviser on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, described the incident as deeply painful and offered condolences to the family.

Governor Sanwo-Olu has directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to begin an independent and transparent investigation. The agency is to find out what caused the child’s death and whether medical standards and professional rules were violated.

HEFAMAA has already visited the hospital and is reviewing medical records and reports. The investigation will also involve the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and other regulatory bodies.

The government said it has zero tolerance for medical negligence and that anyone found responsible will face the full weight of the law. It also assured the public that the findings will be made public once the investigation is completed.

Residents have been urged to remain calm and avoid speculation while the probe is ongoing, as the state says it is committed to transparency, accountability, and the protection of lives.
