Fear spread among port users on Monday morning after a fully loaded diesel tanker overturned on the Liverpool Bridge in Apapa, Lagos, at about 7:45 a.m., spilling its contents. Despite the danger, some commuters and market women around the Liverpool Market were seen trying to scoop fuel from the fallen tanker.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and police officers from Area B Command were quickly deployed to the scene to control traffic and prevent a possible explosion. However, videos shared online showed people still risking their lives by collecting the spilt fuel with buckets and jerrycans.

LASTMA later said the road leading to the bridge was temporarily closed after the incident.

“The road on Liverpool Bridge inward Apapa that was cordoned off has now been reopened after the spilled product was neutralised by officers of the Lagos State Fire Service,” the agency said.
“LASTMA officials are on ground to manage traffic, and we are awaiting the arrival of a tow truck.”

Earlier, the agency had warned motorists to expect delays and to observe safety measures in the area.
