Prominent politicians Peter Obi and Musa Kwankwaso have left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), triggering a wave of defections that is reshaping the political landscape ahead of the upcoming elections.

The moves, which also drew other politicians from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), come as the May 10 deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) draws near. A recent Supreme Court ruling had also weakened both the ADC and the PDP as viable political platforms, pushing opposition figures to seek new ground.

At a strategic meeting in Abuja with NDC leadership, Obi and Kwankwaso outlined their vision for tackling Nigeria’s most pressing challenges, including insecurity and economic hardship.

Obi described the current political environment as toxic, pointing to persistent hostility and external interference in opposition parties as key reasons for his exit. He reaffirmed his commitment to building a united Nigeria and called for an end to internal political disputes.

Kwankwaso echoed similar views, stressing that education and empowerment are essential to fostering unity and lasting peace in the country.

The NDC, described by its leaders as an ideological movement grounded in integrity and inclusive governance, welcomed the new members with optimism, positioning itself as a major force heading into the next election cycle.
