The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has raised serious concerns over the worsening security situation in Yorubaland following the abduction of pupils from three schools in Oyo State by suspected terrorists.

The attacks, which resulted in the death of a staff member and the abduction of several pupils, have forced the temporary closure of schools in the affected areas. Afenifere’s leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, described the incident as part of a broader pattern of insecurity plaguing the region.

In a statement, Fasoranti highlighted a range of security threats facing Yorubaland, including kidnappings, attacks on worshippers, and other violent crimes. He called for urgent and decisive action to combat terrorism in the region.

While commending the prompt response by the Inspector-General of Police and the inauguration of a new violence response unit, Afenifere criticised South-West governors for failing to address their security responsibilities adequately. The group noted that previous security initiatives—such as the acquisition of surveillance aircraft and the installation of CCTV systems—have yet to be effectively utilised.

Afenifere urged state governors to prioritise the safety of their constituents, stressing that Yorubaland must not become a haven for terrorists. “The situation demands serious and immediate action,” the group warned, calling on all stakeholders to work together to stem the tide of insecurity.
