The Nigerian government has started making plans to bring back more than 1,000 of its citizens from South Africa. This is because of growing anti-foreigner feelings in the country.

Screening for people who want to return voluntarily has begun. Officials expect that over 1,000 Nigerians may come back.

This move comes after Ghana did something similar. Ghana recently brought back hundreds of its citizens due to fears of protests and attacks on foreigners.

The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria has secured waivers for some citizens who have immigration offences. This is to make it easier for them to return.

South Africa has more than 30% unemployment. The country has seen new anti-foreigner protests, raising concerns about violence against migrants. The government is increasing enforcement against undocumented immigrants. However, it is advising citizens not to take matters into their own hands.

In total, more than three million foreigners live in South Africa. They make up a significant part of the population.
