The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while in the custody of bandits—a development officials have described as a tragic loss to both the state and the nation.

According to a statement from the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasiru Mu’azu, the retired Army officer succumbed to complications arising from diabetes and hypertension during his captivity.

Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, and his wife were abducted by armed bandits on May 30, 2026. The kidnapping occurred along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli road in the Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State

The couple was intercepted by gunmen while travelling to a wedding. During the ambush, the attackers fired at the vehicle, injuring the driver, who managed to escape, while the general and his wife were seized and taken into the forest. Tragically, after spending two weeks in captivity, the retired Major General died from health complications (diabetes and hypertension) before he could be rescued.

The government noted that despite sustained efforts by state authorities and security agencies to secure his release, the situation ultimately ended in tragedy. The abduction and death of the late general were described as a monumental loss—not only to his family and Katsina State, but to the entire country.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed his condolences to the general’s family and to Nigerians at large, calling the development a dark moment and a sobering reminder of the urgent need for a more coordinated approach to tackling insecurity.

The governor reaffirmed the state’s commitment to working with the Federal Government and security agencies to combat banditry and ensure that those responsible for the crime are brought to justice. He also assured residents that the government’s resolve to eliminate banditry and protect lives and property remains unwavering.

The Katsina State Government has prayed for the repose of the late retired Major General and asked for strength for his family to bear this painful loss.
