The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State says its governorship campaign director’s nephew has been killed by suspected political thugs.

The party claims Dele Ayegbo was shot dead on Wednesday night in Esa-Oke, Obokun Local Government Area — just two days before Saturday’s governorship election.

According to Kola Olabisi, the APC’s spokesperson in Osun, Ayegbo was attacked at a junction close to his home in the Idofin area of Esa-Oke. A second party member was also shot in the incident and taken to hospital, while Ayegbo reportedly died at the scene.

The APC blamed the Accord Party, saying its members and supporters have been terrorised across the state. The party described the killing as one death too many and called on the police to investigate.

Olabisi also claimed that more than 30 APC members have been killed by political thugs in Osun since 2022, with 17 of those deaths said to have happened in the Ijesaland area. He accused state authorities of failing to condemn the killings and urged the police to step up efforts to prevent more violence before the election.

“Those behind this want to scare our members away from voting on Saturday,” he said.

The APC’s allegations have not been independently confirmed, and the Osun State Police Command had not responded to requests for comment at the time of writing.

The incident comes as tensions run high in Osun ahead of Saturday’s election, with the sitting governor — seeking a second term on the Accord platform — and the APC trading accusations in the final days of the campaign. It has also raised fresh concerns about security as voters prepare to head to the polls.
