The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Alhaji Yunusa Abu Ishaq, has been killed by gunmen during a kidnapping incident.

Ishaq was among passengers in a commercial vehicle attacked by kidnappers along the Itobe–Anyigba road on Thursday, 27 August 2026.

In a statement released from Lokoja on Friday, the Kogi State Police Command said it received reports of an armed attack along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway, particularly around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area.

The incident happened at about 5 pm when armed assailants emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on motorists. A blue Toyota Corolla (registration number GWA 636 CH) was found abandoned along the highway.

The driver, identified as Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, was found dead in the vehicle, while another occupant was taken into the bush by the attackers.

Police, working alongside other security agencies, have intensified operations in the area. Personnel are currently combing the surrounding forest in a bid to rescue the abducted victim and track down those responsible.

The body has been evacuated to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for autopsy, while the Command continues to pursue all available leads.

The Commissioner of Police for Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, has directed sustained operational efforts to secure the corridor and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. Motorists and residents along the route have been urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements.

In a separate case, the police confirmed an abduction along the Aloma–Egane Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area on Wednesday, 26 August 2026.

At about 4:40pm, armed hoodlums emerged from the bush around Ogene Zaria, blocked two buses travelling in opposite directions, and abducted some passengers while others escaped.

The Divisional Police Officer, Ofu, led a joint security team to the scene, where two abandoned vehicles were recovered—a Peace Mass Transit white Hummer bus and a yellow 18-seater bus.

A coordinated rescue operation led to the successful rescue of 11 abducted victims, including the drivers of both buses. Most of those rescued were NYSC members travelling from Bayelsa State to Abuja. After debriefing, they were allowed to continue their journey.

The joint operation remains ongoing in the surrounding forest, with the aim of rescuing any remaining victims and apprehending the culprits.
