The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian Navy are working more closely together in the fight against smuggling and criminal activity along the nation’s waterways.

On August 27, 2026, officers from the Western Naval Command paid a visit to the headquarters of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’ in Lagos. The visit underlined a shared commitment to tightening maritime surveillance and safeguarding Nigeria’s territory.

Comptroller Gambo Aliyu, head of FOU Zone ‘A’, described the growing collaboration as vital to protecting critical areas for trade and border security. He stressed that both agencies share a common purpose — keeping Nigeria’s waters safe and its borders secure.

Rear Admiral Abdullahi Mustapha, who led the Naval team, acknowledged the proactive steps taken by the Customs unit. These include deploying a helicopter and special forces to tackle drug trafficking head-on. Their efforts have already paid off, with several successful interceptions of illicit drugs.

Looking Ahead

Both leaders agreed that sustained partnership and effective information sharing are the keys to disrupting criminal networks. By working hand-in-hand, the two agencies aim to make illegal activities far more difficult to carry out across the country.
