As Nigeria observes the 2025 Democracy Day, Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has extended his heartfelt congratulations to all Nigerians. He called on citizens to reignite the spirit of unity, civic responsibility, and active democratic participation, emphasising his unwavering commitment to fostering inclusive governance across the state.

In his commemorative message, Governor Ododo reflected on June 12 as a pivotal milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey. He described the day as “a solemn reminder that democracy is not a gift—it is earned through sacrifice, resolve, and collective effort.” He urged Nigerians to deepen their dedication to protecting and strengthening their democratic heritage.

“Today, we celebrate as one people—united in our history, hope, and shared purpose,” Ododo declared. He paid tribute to the courageous heroes of the 1993 presidential election—the fairest and most transparent in Nigeria’s history, but ultimately annulled—and acknowledged their sacrifices in laying the foundation for Nigeria’s democracy.

The governor highlighted the pivotal role played by pro-democracy champions, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, whose relentless efforts contributed to the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today.

“The sacrifices made by our pro-democracy heroes, including our distinguished President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will never be forgotten,” Ododo affirmed.

Reaffirming Kogi State’s unwavering commitment to the principles of democracy, justice, inclusion, and accountability, Governor Ododo assured residents that his administration would continue to prioritise a people-centred leadership model. He pledged to deliver tangible results in key sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, and security.

“We are not just beneficiaries of the democracy fought for with blood and sweat; we are the custodians of its promise,” he stated.

The governor emphasised that democracy flourishes when it is participatory and transparent. His administration is focused on strengthening institutions, promoting transparency, and empowering citizens, especially the youth, to actively participate in governance.

“To our youth, you are not the leaders of tomorrow; you are the guardians of our democracy today. This democracy belongs to you,” he told them.

He also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, and public servants to lead by example, underscoring that the true measure of democracy is not titles or rhetoric but the tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary people.

“Democracy is strengthened not by titles or speeches but by service—and by results,” Ododo said.

The governor urged citizens to remain vigilant against forces that threaten national unity, emphasising the importance of defending democratic values against threats of division and disruption that undermine Nigeria’s progress.

In alignment with the national development agenda, Ododo reaffirmed his full support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative, pledging to work tirelessly to realise its goals.

In closing, Governor Ododo vowed to continue working diligently, day and night, to uphold the rights and freedoms of all residents of Kogi State, ensuring they live and work in safety, dignity, and peace.

“Let us rise together in the spirit of nationhood. Let us stand united in pursuit of progress. And let’s walk the path of peace, equity, and sustainable development,” he concluded.
