The Anambra State Police Command has officially confirmed that the death of Police Inspector Okolie Amechi was caused by an accidental discharge from his service rifle, reportedly triggered by his 10-year-old son. This heartbreaking incident has sent shockwaves through the community and raised urgent concerns about firearm safety among law enforcement officers.

Previously, SaharaReporters exclusively reported that Inspector Amechi lost his life in an unforeseen accident while on duty at a bank in Awka. The incident took place around 9:40 p.m. on Sunday at Polaris Bank, situated along Zik Avenue near Okeke Street.

In an official statement issued Monday, Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the officer and offered reassuring words of support to the family.

“The Anambra State Police Command deeply regrets the tragic loss of Inspector Okolie Amechi in Awka,” SP Ikenga stated. “This incident, which occurred on the evening of June 15, 2025, is truly painful.”

The tragedy unfolded at the inspector’s residence when his 10-year-old son, unaware of the nature of his father’s weapon, accidentally pulled the trigger of the AK-47 rifle assigned to him. The shot struck Inspector Amechi in the back and also hit his second child on the hand.

Quickly rushed to the hospital, Inspector Amechi was unfortunately pronounced dead by the medical team on duty. The second child, however, is responding to treatment, and efforts are ongoing to ensure their full recovery.

The police have recovered the rifle involved in the incident, and the body of the late officer has been taken to the morgue for further arrangements.

While expressing deep condolences to the family and friends of Inspector Amechi, SP Ikenga emphasised that the command is standing by the grieving family during this difficult time. They also wish the injured child a swift recovery and are committed to reviewing safety protocols to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
