WAFCON Final: Bring Home the Trophy, President Tinubu Urges Super Falcons
As Nigeria’s Super Falcons prepare to face Morocco in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tonight at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, President Bola Tinubu has personally lent his voice of encouragement and support.
In a heartfelt, signed statement issued on Saturday, the President urged the team to secure their record-extending 10th WAFCON title. His message reflects the deep pride and unwavering backing of the Nigerian people for their women’s national team.
A Showcase of Pride and Resilience
President Tinubu praised the Falcons for their “awe-inspiring” performances throughout the tournament. He commended their display of resilience, honour, and sportsmanship both on and off the field. Notably, he highlighted their compassionate gesture in visiting South Africa’s Gabriela Salgado, who was injured during the tournament—an act that epitomises shared humanity, empathy, and sisterly affection, values that resonate deeply within African culture.
Statistics and Past Glory
The President also celebrated the team’s impressive statistics. “If statistics alone win matches, you are already champions,” he noted, referencing their unbeaten run in the group stages, victories in knockout matches, and their remarkable record of conceding only one goal in the semi-finals.
Reminding everyone of their historic dominance, Tinubu highlighted that the Falcons have won all nine of their previous WAFCON finals, a record they aim to extend tonight.
Official Support and Solidarity
To demonstrate the full backing of Nigeria’s government, a high-profile presidential delegation has been dispatched to Morocco to cheer the team in person. The delegation includes key ministers—Hannatu Musawa, Doris Uzoka-Anite, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim—and Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, among others.
He also thanked the families, coaches, friends, the Nigerian community in Morocco, the Nigerian Football Supporters Club, and the Nigerian Mission for their continuous support throughout the tournament.
A Rallying Call
Concluding his message, President Tinubu issued a rallying cry: “You will finish strong by the Grace of God. Go for the tenth! Bring the trophy home. Your fellow countrymen and women, young and old, are rooting for you.”
He expressed his anticipation of welcoming the team, along with the coveted trophy and officials, in Abuja upon their victorious return.
As Nigeria holds its collective breath tonight, citizens across the nation unite in prayer and hope—determined to witness history in the making as the Super Falcons aim for their tenth continental title.
