Concerns over the Igbo community’s safety in Lagos have deepened following the death of Mr. Paul Ahanaonu, an Igbo resident of Abulado, who succumbed to injuries sustained from the  mob attack.

According to multiple community sources, the incident occurred on July 22, 2025, when Mr. Ahanaonu’s car was reportedly struck from behind near the Abulado bus stop. Witnesses say a disagreement broke out between the drivers, after which one of them made a phone call. Shortly afterwards, a group of unidentified men arrived at the scene, and one of the divers, who is of Yoruba origin, identified Paul for them, and they assaulted Mr. Paul Ahanaonu.

He collapsed and passed out during the attack and was taken to the hospital, but despite medical efforts, he passed away on July 26, 2025. Reports from local community members suggest his family has decided not to pursue legal action due to concerns for their safety following threats they are getting..

This tragedy follows another fatal incident in April 2025 involving an Igbo woman, Blessing Eze, in Lagos under similarly violent circumstances.

The recurrence of such cases has sparked renewed discussions about ethnic tensions, resident safety, and the need for stronger law enforcement responses.

The wake-keep for Mr. Ahanaonu is scheduled for Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at his former residence: B Close, 91 Road, Abulado, Lagos. Residents and community leaders are expected to attend in solidarity.
