The Powerful Pen Media Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) kicked off its annual Press Week today in Lagos with a vibrant health walk that combined fitness, camaraderie, and a renewed call for national development through the media.

With the theme: “The Role of the Media in National Development,” the event highlighted the Chapel’s commitment to professionalism, unity, and service to the nation.

Highlights of the Health Walk

• Symbolic Kickoff: The walk began at the Chapter Secretary’s office and concluded at SIFAX, setting the tone for the week-long activities.

• Unity in Motion: Participants walked in a spirited procession, radiating energy, enthusiasm, and a sense of shared purpose.

MAJAN President Speaks at SIFAX Roundabout

At the SIFAX Roundabout, Mr. Tunde Adewole, a PR officer of SIFAX Group, addressed members of the Powerful Pen Media Chapel of the NUJ, appreciating their contributions toward making the work of industry players more impactful.

Comrade Jerry Aguigbo, President of the Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), commended the Chapel’s initiatives and reiterated the importance of the media in shaping national development.

He praised SIFAX as a leading indigenous terminal operator, stressing the value of collaboration between industry stakeholders and the media.

Speaking on the challenges journalists face, Aguigbo noted:

“Journalists are not well taken care of; they are often neither respected nor supported, which makes it difficult for them to perform their duties effectively. About 80% of journalists in Nigeria are not employed by the government. Private employers should learn to better care for journalists, while the government should also provide adequate support for those under its employment. This would make it easier for journalists in Nigeria to function effectively.” He said

Industry Voices: SIFAX and NPA

A representative from the Corporate Affairs Department of SIFAX lauded the Chapel’s initiative, noting the critical role of partnerships in Nigeria’s growth story.

Delivering the keynote address, Madam Hadiza Usman Shaibu, Principal Manager, Corporate Affairs, Nigerian Ports Authority (Lagos Port Complex), urged journalists to uphold professionalism in their work. She applauded the Chapel’s road show for promoting peace and order along Apapa Road, describing it as a symbolic act of service to society.

The success of the health walk and roundtable discussion has set a positive tone for the rest of Press Week 2025. Members of the Powerful Pen Media Chapel are expected to continue with lectures, social engagements, and other activities that underscore the indispensable role of the media in Nigeria’s development journey.
