House Committee Urges Tincan Customs to Sustain Vigilance Against Substandard Imports
The House Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations has called on the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tincan Island Port Command, to maintain strict surveillance and prevent the entry of substandard and harmful products into the country.
The lawmakers appealed on Wednesday, 5 November 2025, during an oversight visit to the Command. The visit was aimed at assessing ongoing operations, ensuring alignment with global best practices, and reinforcing national safety standards.
During the engagement, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, reiterated the Service’s commitment to protecting the nation through effective border management.
Chairman of the Committee, Honourable David Zacharias, commended the Command for its dedication, describing the oversight visit as essential to strengthening safety compliance across the country’s trade corridors.
“We understand that protecting our communities against substandard products is a joint responsibility. The safety of Nigerians is non-negotiable, and we must all do our best to uphold that,” Zacharias said.Other members of the Committee also provided recommendations on curbing the circulation of unsafe goods, stressing the need for continuous collaboration among government agencies and stakeholders operating within the ports to secure the nation’s borders.
