The Nigerian Shippers\u2019 Council has approved a marginal increase in charges by shipping companies, but has directed them to first inform and educate their customers before implementing the new rates.<\/p>\n
The Council also announced plans to review the charges of the ETO electronic call-up system for trucks, operated by Truck Transit Park Limited (TTP) in collaboration with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).<\/p>\n
Speaking at a stakeholders\u2019 meeting in Apapa on Friday, the Executive Secretary of the Council, Dr. Pius Akutah, said the Council, as Port Economic Regulator, is aware of the proposed increases and has given approval for some affected charges. He explained that shipping companies had requested a review due to rising inflation, exchange rate pressures, and operating costs.<\/p>\n
According to him, only charges impacted by these economic factors were approved for a slight increase, and shipping companies were asked to discuss the changes with their customers first. He said some companies have already done so and received understanding from their clients.<\/p>\n
On the ETO call-up system, Dr. Akutah said the Council has received many complaints over rising ticket costs and alleged activities of syndicates at port gates. He disclosed that engagements have begun with TTP and NPA to address the issue, adding that a formal review of the charges is expected before the end of January. Stakeholders were urged to submit invoices and evidence to help the Council properly assess the situation.<\/p>\n
The Shippers\u2019 Council also spoke on container deposits paid by importers and customs agents. Dr. Akutah said the Council is working with the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) to replace container deposits with container insurance, as provided in the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025.<\/p>\n
He noted that the law, which took effect in July 2025, aims to stop illegal practices and make shipping companies accountable for containers.
