The Customs Area Controller of the command, Frank Onyeka, disclosed this while speaking with journalists at the command on Tuesday. He said the figure shows an increase of about N30 billion compared to the N116.4 billion collected in January 2025.<\/p>\n
According to him, the N145.9 billion recorded in January 2026 marks a significant rise from the amount generated in the same period last year.<\/p>\n
Onyeka attributed the improved performance to teamwork among officers, stronger collaboration with stakeholders, and constructive engagement with the media. He noted that responsible reportage has helped the command improve its operations.<\/p>\n
On the planned paperless operations expected to begin in the second quarter of the year, the controller said the command is fully prepared. He explained that the initiative is aimed at speeding up trade processes and improving transparency at the port.<\/p>\n
He described the move as a step towards reducing physical contact in cargo processing and ensuring quicker clearance of goods. Onyeka said the goal is to release containers smoothly once proper declarations are made and scanner images show no issues.<\/p>\n
Under the new system, importers and clearing agents will upload documents electronically. Properly declared and palletised consignments will pass through scanners without physical examination. However, consignments flagged by the risk management system or those from watch-listed countries will undergo full examination for security reasons.<\/p>\n
Reacting to concerns about possible loopholes or congestion, Onyeka said compliance by stakeholders would determine the success of the system. He assured that files would not be delayed unnecessarily and that any discrepancies would be resolved through structured engagement.<\/p>\n
The controller also commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi<\/span><\/span>, for providing strategic direction for the reforms, describing him as a strong supporter of modernisation efforts across commands.<\/p>\n He added that the command would continue to work closely with other government agencies at the port to reduce cargo dwell time and improve efficiency.
