Criticism is growing over President Bola Tinubu\u2019s recent visit to Plateau State, with many questioning why his stop was limited to the airport and lasted only about 10 minutes. Critics say the visit did not meaningfully engage with the victims and grieving communities affected by recent attacks that left dozens dead.<\/p>\n
According to reports, Tinubu said he had limited time to leave Jos because the airport had no electricity to operate for longer. Still, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the way the visit was handled, describing it as insensitive and disconnected from the suffering on the ground.<\/p>\n
Atiku, through a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, alleged that the President did not visit bereaved families or injured victims in hospitals. He also claimed the visit offered no clear security direction or assurances that such violence would not happen again.<\/p>\n
The criticism goes further, with Atiku arguing that the President\u2019s engagement was confined to the airport. He alleged that Tinubu used the opportunity for a meet-and-greet with political allies and traditional rulers, far removed from communities dealing with mourning and trauma. Atiku also criticised the decision to transport grieving residents from parts of Jos to an area near Barkin Ladi for the event.<\/p>\n
He described the moment as a \u201cchoreographed spectacle,\u201d saying it prioritised optics instead of empathy and dignity. In his view, Nigerians are not asking to simply see the President\u2014they want protection, effective governance, and real steps to stop the violence.<\/p>\n
Atiku added that the approach reflects a pattern, pointing to past situations where condolence visits were said to avoid the worst-hit areas and instead shift into political events. He warned that until the administration focuses on people-centred action rather than appearances, similar visits will remain empty.<\/p>\n
Despite the backlash, Tinubu pledged to end the cycle of violence in Plateau State and announced plans to strengthen security in Jos. He said more than 5,000 surveillance cameras would be installed to improve monitoring and support quicker response by security agencies.<\/p>\n
He also told residents that his administration would do everything possible to prevent such tragedies from recurring. Tinubu expressed sympathy for the victims\u2019 families and said no amount of money can replace lost lives, while promising relief and justice for those responsible.<\/p>\n
In addition, he ordered security agencies to intensify operations and arrest perpetrators. He also directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to conduct a comprehensive assessment of victims and losses to guide targeted assistance.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a U.S. lawmaker, Chris Smith, also condemned the killings in Plateau State. He urged the Nigerian government to protect Christian communities, warning that attacks during significant religious periods threaten peaceful coexistence and intensify suffering.<\/p>\n
Smith described the incidents as part of a disturbing pattern and called for immediate and concrete steps\u2014especially increased security deployment and accountability for those behind the violence.<\/p>\n
As the crisis continues, the Nigerian Army said it deployed additional troops to Plateau State to tackle insecurity. The reinforcement is intended to help protect lives and property and support ongoing efforts to restore calm in affected areas.<\/p>\n
Other voices have also raised concerns, including the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, which claimed the killings may involve foreign influence designed to inflame religious and communal tension. The council urged the government to strengthen intelligence and take decisive action to prevent escalation.<\/p>\n
