The Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency (SASA) has intensified efforts to tackle illegal revenue collection and extortion in the state. According to the agency, operatives arrested suspects accused of harassing traders and commercial operators, and the case is being pursued in court through a mobile court arrangement.<\/p>\n
SASA\u2019s media aide, Karen James, disclosed this to journalists at the agency\u2019s headquarters in Onitsha. She said the agency remains firm on enforcing laws against unlawful levies and extortion, in line with its commitment to restoring order and protecting legitimate businesses.<\/p>\n
James named two suspects, Michael Uwaoma and Ndubuisi Aniukwu, alleging they were involved in extorting traders and commercial operators in areas including\u00a0Mgbuka Obosi\u00a0and\u00a0Umusiome Junction, Nkpor. She further explained that preliminary investigations indicated that Aniukwu acted on the directive of\u00a0Anthony Onyekwelu, who allegedly set a daily remittance target.<\/p>\n
After their arrest, the suspects were arraigned before a magistrate’s court. The court granted bail under strict conditions, including a N100,000 bail bond, a\u00a0N300,000 fine, and a\u00a0verified Level 17 civil servant\u00a0to serve as surety. The matter was also remanded for legal processes while it awaits further hearing, with the case adjourned to\u00a0June 3, 2026.<\/p>\n
The agency also stated that its operatives recently arrested\u00a0three additional suspects in separate operations around Onitsha and neighbouring communities.<\/p>\n
