Ghana has written to the African Union (AU) over the continued xenophobic attacks against African nationals in South Africa. The issue is expected to be discussed at the AU\u2019s Eighth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting scheduled for June 24 to 27, 2026, in El Alamein, Egypt.<\/p>\n

In a memo dated May 6, 2026, addressed to the AU chairperson, Ghana\u2019s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Ablakwa<\/span><\/span>, expressed serious concern about the recurring attacks.<\/p>\n

According to the letter, the attacks have resulted in deaths, destruction of businesses and investments, and threats to the safety of African nationals living in South Africa.<\/p>\n

The Ghanaian government said the continued violence against fellow Africans goes against the principles of African solidarity, unity, and brotherhood promoted by member states of the African Union.<\/p>\n

The letter noted that the situation is especially troubling, considering the support African countries gave South Africa during the struggle against apartheid and its transition to democracy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is particularly troubling that manifestations of xenophobia, including violent attacks against fellow Africans, have persisted in recent years,\u201d the letter stated.<\/p>\n

Ghana also argued that the attacks violate the African Charter on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights, weaken Pan-African integration efforts, and conflict with the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which supports free movement and economic cooperation across the continent.<\/p>\n

As part of its recommendations, Ghana urged the AU to formally include the matter on the agenda of the June meeting. It also called for stronger monitoring of member states\u2019 obligations under AU treaties and the establishment of a fact-finding mission to investigate the causes of xenophobic violence in South Africa.<\/p>\n

In addition, the letter encouraged dialogue and reconciliation initiatives to promote tolerance, inclusion, and renewed commitment to African unity. Ghana stressed that Africa\u2019s future depends on mutual respect, shared prosperity, and the dignity of all Africans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
