Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of 28-year-old Oghenemine Ogidi, who was shot dead by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State.<\/p>\n
Among those arrested is the person believed to have sent the Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, to Effurun through a commercial transport service. The suspects were moved to the Effurun Area Command on Wednesday night as investigations continue.<\/p>\n
A source close to the investigation confirmed that one suspect is the person who arranged the shipment. The identity of the second suspect has not been fully disclosed, but investigators believe it may be the driver who transported the parcel.<\/p>\n
What Happened<\/strong><\/p>\n Ogidi, popularly called “Mene Ogidi,” left home to collect a waybill for a friend in Sapele. He told his family his phone was faulty, so he borrowed his mother’s phone, called the owner of the parcel, and received transport fare to go pick it up. He asked his sister for the quickest route and left.<\/p>\n When he didn’t return that evening, his family grew worried. A friend later told them Ogidi had been arrested. The family searched all police stations in the area \u2014 Ekpan, Mopol Base, Eburumede, A Division, and B Division \u2014 but no station admitted to holding him.<\/p>\n They posted his picture online as a missing person. It was only after a friend asked for a clearer photo that videos of Ogidi’s arrest were shared with the family.<\/p>\n “We were first told the police shot him in the hand, and that was not enough for them, so they killed him,” his sister said.<\/p>\n A Family Grieves \u2014 Again<\/strong><\/p>\n In an emotional interview with BBC News Pidgin, Ogidi’s mother broke down in tears, revealing that this is not the first time she has lost a son to police violence. Another of her sons was killed by police years earlier.<\/p>\n “What did I do to the police?” she asked. “From the video shown to me, I heard my son begging them that it was someone who sent him to help pick the waybill.”<\/p>\n Ogidi’s sister described him as the pillar of the family. “He was my everything. There is nothing I have done in my life without him. Even for my son to buy shoes, he would first call brother Mene.”<\/p>\n Police Response<\/strong><\/p>\n The Nigeria Police Force announced the dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman, the officer who shot Ogidi, along with other officers involved. Force spokesperson DCP Anthony Okon Placid said the dismissed officers will be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution.<\/p>\n But for Ogidi’s family, this does little to ease the pain.
