President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in Oyo State and directed a specialised security unit to intensify efforts to rescue pupils and teachers abducted from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area.<\/p>\n
The directive came 16 days after gunmen attacked communities in the area and took dozens of schoolchildren and their teachers hostage. The attack, which occurred on May 15, 2026, targeted Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in Esiele and Yawota communities.<\/p>\n
During the assault, a mathematics teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was beheaded. A motorcyclist was also killed, and a security operative died after stepping on improvised explosive devices planted by the abductors during early rescue attempts.<\/p>\n
A high-powered Federal Government delegation conveyed the President’s directives to community leaders during a visit to the affected communities on Sunday. The delegation was led by the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and included the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu; the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; and the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare.<\/p>\n
Addressing residents in both English and Yoruba, Gbajabiamila said the President was deeply troubled by the incident and determined to deploy every available resource to secure the victims’ release. He assured parents that the operation would be intelligence-led and carefully coordinated, using both kinetic and non-kinetic measures.<\/p>\n
He also responded to appeals from parents and community members urging caution in the rescue operation, saying, “Your pain and anxiety are understood. By the grace of God, your children will return safely to your arms.”<\/p>\n
The delegation visited the Soun of Ogbomosoland, HRM Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, to commiserate with the traditional ruler. They also visited the widow of the slain teacher, Mrs Mary Oyedokun, and her two children, where Gbajabiamila delivered the President’s personal condolences.<\/p>\n
The community’s request for the establishment of a military base in the area has also been forwarded to the President for consideration. The 1,000 forest guards will be recruited in collaboration with the Oyo State Government.<\/p>\n
