Civil society groups staged a protest on Monday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, demanding urgent government action over the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in the state.<\/p>\n
The demonstration came days after teachers had protested in Ogbomoso, where the kidnapping happened. Protesters marched through parts of Ibadan carrying placards with messages like “Every Life Matters, Stop the Kidnappers,” “47 Abducted, Scared and Alone,” and “Stand Up! Speak Out!”<\/p>\n
The abduction, which took place in Oriire Local Government Area, has continued to raise concern among education stakeholders and residents across the state.<\/p>\n
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to withdraw their services starting Monday, June 1, 2026, until further notice.<\/p>\n
According to the union, the strike is to protest the continued captivity of abducted teachers and pupils, whose rescue and safe release remain uncertain. The NUT said the prolonged detention has created fear among teachers, discouraged parents from sending their children to school, and heightened tension across communities.<\/p>\n
In a statement signed by the NUT chairman in Oyo State, Hassan Fatai, the union said the strike aims to draw the government’s attention to the need to intensify efforts toward securing the safe release of the abductees without further delay. The union urged teachers to comply with the directive, remain law-abiding, and stay safe at home during the strike.<\/p>\n
Following the abduction, President Tinubu approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards and the deployment of a special rescue team to strengthen security in the area.<\/p>\n
A federal government delegation, led by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, visited the affected communities in Oriire Local Government Area. The delegation included the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, the Minister of Defence, and other officials.<\/p>\n
The delegation conveyed President Tinubu’s deep concern over the incident and his commitment to securing the safe return of the victims. They also informed community leaders that the President would consider their request for a military base in the area.<\/p>\n
Earlier, on May 15, 2026, pupils and teachers were abducted from Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in the area. One teacher was killed during the incident, and classroom activities were shut down in Ogbomoso the following week as teachers protested.<\/p>\n
