Yet many believe the psychological scars never disappeared.<\/p>\n Today, one striking behaviour is evident among many Southeasterners: a deep desire to avoid trouble at all costs.<\/p>\n Many would rather stay silent than speak out or state their views because they fear being misinterpreted, unlike other tribes in Nigeria.<\/p>\n Many southeasterners would rather blend in than stand out.<\/p>\n Many would rather criticise their own people than risk being associated with anything that could be viewed as controversial.<\/p>\n But why?<\/p>\n For decades, stories of the war have been told around family tables.<\/p>\n Stories of starvation.<\/p>\n Stories of loss.<\/p>\n Stories of survival.<\/p>\n Stories of marginalisation<\/p>\n Stories of what happens when people find themselves on the losing side of history.<\/p>\n As a result, many Southeasterners grew up with an unwritten lesson:<\/p>\n “Keep your head down. Avoid trouble. Survive first.”<\/p>\n To some, this mindset has become a survival strategy. Focus on your craft, forget the government, they cant help you<\/p>\n To others, it has become a burden.<\/p>\n One painful reality is that Southeasterners often appear more willing, ready to attack one another than confront the issues affecting their region or themselves. .<\/p>\n When one person speaks out, another quickly distances him\/herself from it to prove to Nigerian that he or she is better.<\/p>\n When one person raises concerns, another rushes to prove he is not part of the movement.<\/p>\n When one person demands change, another labels him a troublemaker.<\/p>\n The result?<\/p>\n Division.<\/p>\n People known for intelligence, business success, hard work, and resilience sometimes become their own biggest critics. because the Nigerian states have succeeded in inciting them over each other, yet the Southeasterners don’t see it.<\/p>\n Many South Easterners privately admit they feel pressured to constantly prove their loyalty to Nigeria and Nigerians.<\/p>\n Whether this feeling is justified or not, it has shaped attitudes and behaviour for decades.<\/p>\n Some fear being misunderstood.<\/p>\n Some fear being labelled.<\/p>\n Some fear losing opportunities.<\/p>\n Some simply fear repeating history.<\/p>\n And so, silence becomes safer than speaking.<\/p>\n There is a difference between peace and fear.<\/p>\n Peace comes from justice, fairness, and understanding.<\/p>\n Fear comes from uncertainty and self-preservation.<\/p>\n A society cannot truly heal if people feel they must hide their thoughts to be accepted.<\/p>\n Likewise, no nation can reach its full potential if any group feels unheard, excluded, or afraid to express legitimate concerns.<\/p>\n The issue is bigger than the South East.<\/p>\n It is about nation-building.<\/p>\n It is about trust.<\/p>\n It is about creating a country where every citizen\u2014regardless of tribe, religion, or region\u2014feels valued and respected.<\/p>\n The real question is not whether Southeasterners have changed since the war.<\/p>\n The real question is:<\/p>\n What kind of Nigeria are we building for future generations?<\/strong><\/p>\n A Nigeria where people speak freely and are heard?<\/p>\n Or a Nigeria where fear continues to shape behaviour decades after the last gunshot?<\/p>\n The war may have ended in 1970.<\/p>\n But until every Nigerian feels equally protected, respected, and included, the conversation it started will continue.<\/p>\n And perhaps that is the truth: many people are still afraid to discuss.<\/p>\n What do you think?
