{"id":1178,"date":"2024-06-14T12:38:39","date_gmt":"2024-06-14T12:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/?p=1178"},"modified":"2024-06-14T12:38:39","modified_gmt":"2024-06-14T12:38:39","slug":"nigeria-is-broke-political-officeholders-should-be-put-on-minimum-wage-soludo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/2024\/06\/14\/nigeria-is-broke-political-officeholders-should-be-put-on-minimum-wage-soludo\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria Is Broke; Political Officeholders Should Be Put On Minimum Wage \u2013 Soludo"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"mvp-content-body-top\" class=\"left relative\">\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\" class=\"left relative\">\n<h3>The Governor of Anambra State, Charles Soludo has advocated a drastic reduction in the cost of governance in Nigeria.<\/h3>\n<p>The Governor lamented that the nation is broke but government and elected officials continue to live in denial and show off flamboyant lifestyles at the detriment of the masses.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-3\">\n<div id=\"v-naijanews-v1-0\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div id=\"_vdo_ads_player_ai_24752\" class=\"vdo_video_unit vdo_floating\">\n<div id=\"vdo_logo_parent\">\n<div id=\"cross_div\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div id=\"vdo_ai_cross\" class=\"cross\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\nAs a way to curb the developing crisis from escalating further, Soludo said political officeholders should be placed on the national minimum wage.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>The<\/b> Anambra State Governor made the call on Wednesday while speaking at the special edition of The Platform, an event organised by The Covenant Nation to mark democracy day in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Soludo expressed that Nigerians are hungry, broke and poor, but the ruling class continue to live extravagantly at the expense of the common people.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLet\u2019s come clean and straight with Nigerians. Nigeria is very poor and broke but the lifestyle of government and government officials does not show it, especially with the obscene flamboyance in public display,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Soludo said.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe poor are hungry and impatient, let\u2019s not annoy them more with our insensitivity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn this case, I agree with reverend father Mbaka, who said elected governors should also earn minimum wage. I agree that we should be paid that so that we can feel that as well.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn Anambra, I have not received a kobo as salary since I assumed office. I have donated my salary to the state.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt is symbolic. It is not much. I think generally, the system is in denial. There must be some signalling, it is just the symbolism of this.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Soludo called for an end to wasteful spending in governance, stressing that elected officials must always remember they are in office based on public trust.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThat is why I proposed reinventing the new code of conduct for public officers,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFor the federal government, the actual projecting revenue comes to about N6,160 per Nigerian, per month.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFor the states, except Lagos and a few states, most states have revenues amounting to less than N3,000 per resident, per month.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt is from this shares per citizen that we are expected to provide all the infrastructure, debt service, pay salaries and pensions, build schools and provide everything.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFor each of our wasteful spending, let\u2019s be conscious about the fact how many citizen share we are squandering.
