When the man refused to pay and insisted his papers were in order, the officer held onto his driver&#8217;s license and, almost casually, said something close to this: <em>&#8220;I just see that we are very close. If you were Igbo or another person, I would have just\u2026\u201d detained you\u201d&#8221;<\/em> \u2014 and gestured toward the roadside, toward detention, toward whatever &#8220;handling&#8221; an Igbo man would have received instead.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100069334897455\/videos\/pcb.1346629890991495\/1567564895087930<\/p>\n<p>The video went viral. Nigerians expressed outrage, and I ask why. Officers were named, arrested, and an investigation was opened. Human rights lawyers tagged the Inspector General of Police. Commentators called it a hate crime.<\/p>\n<p>And Igbo people watched all of this unfold with a familiar, exhausted feeling: <em>finally, you people are seeing it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Because here is the truth nobody wants to sit with \u2014 that officer did not invent a new form of treatment for Igbo people in that moment. He simply said out loud, on camera, what has been standard operating procedure for decades. The only thing unusual about that checkpoint was that a camera happened to be rolling. Everything else \u2014 the assumption that an Igbo man is disposable, that his detention requires no justification, that his dignity is negotiable \u2014 is not new. It is policy without a memo. It is bigotry so normalised that it doesn&#8217;t even register as newsworthy until it&#8217;s caught on video.<\/p>\n<p>So the question this moment should raise is not &#8220;did you hear what that officer said?&#8221; The real questions are the ones nobody is counting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How many Igbo men are in Nigerian prisons today simply because they are Igbo?<\/li>\n<li>How many Igbo-owned businesses have been shut down, raided, or &#8220;sealed&#8221; for infractions that go unpunished when committed by others?<\/li>\n<li>How many Igbo men are sitting in awaiting-trial detention for 7, 10, even 20 years \u2014 not convicted of anything, just forgotten?<\/li>\n<li>How many Igbo buildings have been destroyed even after having full documents because they are Igbo<\/li>\n<li>How many Igbo children have been killed in circumstances that would have triggered national outrage if the victim belonged to another tribe?<\/li>\n<li>How many Igbo protesters have been singled out, arrested, and held \u2014 while everyone else who marched beside them walked home free?<\/li>\n<li>How many Igbo men have been shot by police or soldiers, with the case closed before it was ever truly opened?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nobody is counting. That is the point. An Igbo life, an Igbo business, an Igbo child&#8217;s future \u2014 these things are allowed to disappear quietly in Nigeria, because the people affected already know, before they even try to speak, that no one will believe them and no one will act. So many of them stop trying. They absorb the loss, bury the grief, and carry on pretending it&#8217;s fine \u2014 because performing okay-ness is sometimes the only protection an Igbo person has left.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Bigotry with No Name on the Statute Books \u2014 and No Need for One<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nobody passed a law saying &#8220;discriminate against Igbo people.&#8221; It didn&#8217;t need to be written down. It lives in checkpoints, in tender boards, in promotion lists, in prison admission books, in who gets stopped and who gets waved through, in whose container gets impounded at the port and whose doesn&#8217;t. It is a bigotry practised so widely, by so many institutions and so many individuals, that it has effectively become policy in Nigeria\u2014 even though you will never find it in an official document. That is what makes it so hard to fight. You cannot sue a feeling. You cannot appeal a pattern. You can only live inside it and hope your name doesn&#8217;t come up wrong on the wrong day, at the wrong checkpoint, in front of the wrong officer, at the wrong table etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Business That Isn&#8217;t Really Yours<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a quiet, humiliating economy that many Igbo entrepreneurs in Nigeria know intimately, and it usually goes something like this: an Igbo businessman builds the skill, the network, the capacity to execute a contract \u2014 say, a supply deal with a federal agency. He puts in his bid. He is told, sometimes not even subtly, that the contract will not go to a company with his name on it., Igbo names don\u2019t attract contracts most times, so he goes looking for someone to &#8220;front \u201c, \u00a0for him \u2014 someone whose name won&#8217;t get &#8220;struck out&#8221; the moment a selection committee sees it. He finds a person willing to lend their identity to the paperwork. Hausa names are salable. That person, who may not lift a finger, who may not understand the first thing about the business, becomes the &#8220;owner&#8221; on record \u2014 and takes a cut, sometimes as much as 40%, simply for being the acceptable face\/ name of a contract that an Igbo man built from nothing. The Igbo man does all the sourcing, all the logistics, all the labour, absorbs all the risk \u2014 and can be left with the smaller share of what should have been entirely his.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a rumour. It is a pattern well known within Igbo business circles, repeated in different industries, under different names, for different contracts \u2014 a private, unspoken tax on being Igbo in a system that will accept your competence but not your name.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Remove the Nnanna&#8221;: A Personal Account<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My name is Beady Nnanna. I started building my media career in Abuja back in 2013\u20132017. From early on, there was a pattern I couldn&#8217;t ignore: when names were submitted for jobs, for opportunities, for consideration \u2014 other names sailed through. Mine, again and again, was struck out. Not because I lacked the skill. Not because I lacked the qualification. A friend, Abubakar, who had watched this happen to me more than once, finally said what he thought was a kindness: change your name. Drop the &#8220;Nnanna.&#8221; Once people see that name, they know you&#8217;re Igbo, and that alone is enough to close a door before you ever get to knock on it.<\/p>\n<p>I listened to him. I carried the weight of that suggestion, cried over it, and eventually agreed to try it. We went to a secretariat in Abuja together and printed new complimentary cards under a different name \u2014 &#8220;Beady Nick.&#8221; I remember feeling almost relieved, thinking: now maybe they&#8217;ll call me back. Now maybe my name won&#8217;t be the reason I&#8217;m invisible.<\/p>\n<p>But as we stepped out of that building, something in me refused to let it stand. I was about to erase who I was so that people who had never even given me a fair chance could feel comfortable with me. The Igbo in me said: God forbid. I discarded those cards on the spot.<\/p>\n<p>It has not been easy since. Building a media career as an Igbo woman in Nigeria means learning to recognise a very specific kind of cruelty \u2014 one that rarely announces itself. It&#8217;s emotional blackmail dressed as procedure. It&#8217;s torture that leaves no visible mark. You can feel yourself being quietly sidelined; you can almost point to the exact moment it happens \u2014 and still have no proof, no recourse, nothing to hold up except your own certainty that you were passed over, again, for the same reason as always.<\/p>\n<p>In Abuja, when the person doing the selecting is Hausa, Hausa candidates are considered first. Yoruba then last; Igbo candidates come after \u2014 when the person doing the selecting is Yoruba, Yoruba people come first, then Hausa, Igbos last if there&#8217;s room left at all, a few token slots, an afterthought. Positions like AIG of Police, senior customs postings, and other command roles have historically been positions Igbo officers were denied even when they were the most qualified person in the room.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2023: The Loudest Example<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you want the clearest, most public illustration of this pattern, look no further than the 2023 presidential election. Many Nigerians \u2014 particularly among the Igbo and the broader &#8220;Obidient&#8221; movement \u2014 believe Peter Obi, an Igbo candidate, won that election by a wide margin, and that the result was manipulated to deny him the presidency. This remains one of the most fiercely contested claims in recent Nigerian politics: Obi and his supporters pursued the matter through the courts, where the court ultimately upheld the declared winner. Whatever the courts decided, the deeper wound for many Igbo Nigerians isn&#8217;t just about one election \u2014 it&#8217;s the decades-long sense that an Igbo man is not permitted to hold Nigeria&#8217;s highest office, no matter how the numbers fall. That belief didn&#8217;t start with Obi, and it won&#8217;t end with him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why the Silence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The hardest part of all this is not the discrimination itself \u2014 it&#8217;s the loneliness of carrying it. Igbo people who experience this kind of targeting often say nothing, because they already know how the conversation goes: <em>are you sure? Maybe it&#8217;s not about tribe. Maybe you&#8217;re overreacting. Maybe it&#8217;s just Nigeria being Nigeria for everyone.<\/em> So the story gets swallowed. The business closure gets absorbed as bad luck. The prison term gets endured as fate. The passed-over promotion gets explained away. Everyone smiles, everyone continues, and the pattern keeps repeating precisely because no one is willing to call it by its name.<\/p>\n<p>That officer on the Lagos\u2013Ibadan Expressway didn&#8217;t create anything new. He just got caught saying the quiet part out loud. And now, for a few news cycles, Nigeria is &#8220;shocked.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Igbo people are not shocked. We have simply been living it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Should Happen Now<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If this moment is going to mean anything beyond a viral clip and a disciplinary hearing for four inspectors, it has to become a bigger reckoning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Independent data on ethnicity in police detentions, awaiting-trial populations, and use-of-force incidents \u2014 not anecdote, actual numbers.<\/li>\n<li>Transparent, auditable criteria for federal appointments and security postings, so &#8220;federal character&#8221; stops being a phrase and starts being a practice.<\/li>\n<li>Protection for whistleblowers and journalists \u2014 including Igbo journalists \u2014 who try to document these patterns.<\/li>\n<li>Public acknowledgement, from institutions and from fellow Nigerians, that this is not paranoia. It is a lived, documented, repeated reality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Until that happens, every Igbo person in Nigeria will keep doing what I did with those cards in Abuja \u2014 deciding, over and over, whether to shrink themselves for a system that has already decided who belongs, or to hold onto their name and pay whatever price that costs.<\/p>\n<p>I chose to keep my name.
