Heavy security deployment<\/h2>\n

Nigeria’s governorship election in Osun State is set for Saturday, and the police have rolled out a major security operation to keep the day peaceful and orderly.<\/p>\n

The Inspector-General of Police confirmed that 30 Commissioners of Police will be on duty across the state. A Deputy Inspector-General of Police will oversee security during the poll. In total, more than 15,000 police operatives will be on the ground.<\/p>\n

Police spokesperson CSP Anietie Iniedu said the deployment started about three weeks before the election. A police helicopter and a drone unit have also arrived in Osogbo for surveillance during and after the voting.<\/p>\n

Every one of Osun’s 30 local government areas will have its own unit of the Mobile Police Force\u2014roughly 60 officers each. That’s in addition to two mobile police units stationed at the INEC headquarters in Osogbo, the state capital.<\/p>\n

The Army will cordon off all border roads leading into Osun from midnight on Saturday. Iniedu said the state will be “locked down”\u2014no vehicular movement will be allowed except for those on essential duty, security work, or people going to cast their votes.<\/p>\n

A mobile court will be set up to handle anyone arrested for election offences like intimidation, vote-buying, or ballot-box snatching. Police also said they’ve mopped up about 34 illegal firearms in the state so far.<\/p>\n

Vote-buying concerns<\/h2>\n

Some residents in Osogbo told reporters they received cash from people claiming to be canvassers for political parties. Traders in several Osogbo markets said they each got payments of N15,000 and then another N10,000, with promises of more on Election Day if they voted a certain way. Some residents said they took the money; others refused.<\/p>\n

The APC spokesperson denied his party was involved in vote-buying. The Accord Party did not respond to calls.<\/p>\n

INEC urges peace<\/h2>\n

INEC has called on parties and candidates to honour the peace accord they signed before the election. The commission said tensions have risen in the state recently, but it’s confident the vote will be held in a secure environment.<\/p>\n
