The Lagos State Government has warned husbands against forcing their wives to have sex without their consent, saying anyone found guilty could face life imprisonment.
\nThe warning was given by the Director of Public Prosecutions at the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Haroun Adebayo, during a media briefing organised by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) in Ikeja. The event marked the start of the agency’s September 2026 Awareness Month campaign.
\nAdebayo explained that while the law in Lagos State does not classify forced sex between a husband and wife as rape, it can be prosecuted as sexual assault by penetration, which carries a sentence of life imprisonment.
\nHe said if a husband forces his wife to have sex after she has refused, especially during a period of conflict or separation, the wife has the right to report the incident to the authorities.
\nAccording to him, a husband cannot assume he has the right to force his wife into sex simply because they are married or because he paid her bride price.
\nHe added that anyone experiencing domestic or sexual violence should report the matter to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency for appropriate action.<\/p>\n
