The Customs Police Unit are the football champions of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Zone A Inter-Command Games. They beat the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Command 1-0 in the final.<\/p>\n

A goal in the first half settled the match. The Unit held firm on defence in the second half to take the trophy, with players and supporters celebrating. The win came after a tournament built on fitness, teamwork, and friendship among officers.<\/p>\n

The football final was the main event of the wider Zone A games. Sixteen teams from regional Customs commands took part across four sports: football, chess, badminton, and table tennis. The games ran from August 17 to September 5, 2026, at the Customs Training College in Ikeja, Lagos. The theme was “Fit to Serve, United to Lead.”<\/p>\n

At the closing ceremony, Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi thanked Zone A leaders and organisers for a colourful, high-quality tournament. He said it reflected his plans for consolidation, collaboration, and innovation.<\/p>\n

Adeniyi noted that sister agencies, including the Nigeria Immigration Service and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, also took part. He said this showed strong interagency teamwork in protecting national security. He praised the parade of participating commands and the creativity of their outfits.<\/p>\n

The Comptroller-General called for the competition to be revived and expanded beyond the zonal level. He pointed out that past zonal games had led the way for inter-zonal competitions in the past.<\/p>\n

He stressed the need to improve sports facilities, especially training grounds, across Customs formations. He noted the Service’s long history of helping sports grow in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

According to him, Customs already has teams in sports such as volleyball, basketball, football, beach volleyball, and athletics. Better facilities, he said, would help officers develop and show their skills.<\/p>\n

Adeniyi said the planned new site for the Customs Training College in Ogun State would include modern sports facilities. In the meantime, temporary arrangements would be made at the current college in Lagos for recruits.<\/p>\n

Beyond the medals and trophies, the CGC urged officers to take on the values that sport teaches.<\/p>\n

“The virtues of discipline, teamwork, and strategy are the most vital takeaways from a competition like this,” he said. He added that these same qualities support Customs work, with discipline driving patrols, teamwork enabling smooth coordination, and strategy helping meet revenue targets.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Assistant Comptroller-General Mohammed Babandede, Zonal Coordinator for Zone A, thanked the Comptroller-General for approving the games. He said the event would not have happened without his support.<\/p>\n

He also praised the organising committee for delivering a successful tournament that brought different commands together.<\/p>\n

Babandede reminded participants that beyond the scores, every officer who took part was a winner. He urged them to use the experience to grow, aim for excellence, and come back stronger in future editions.<\/p>\n
