Some homecomings aren’t celebrations \u2014 they’re quiet reckonings with all that was lost along the way.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma boarded a plane in Nigeria and flew back to Freetown. It sounds simple. It wasn’t. Behind that single flight stretched more than two years of exile, a treason charge that could have ended very differently, and the painful reality that a man who once led his nation spent over 730 days watching it from a distance.<\/p>\n

Koroma, who governed Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018, left for Nigeria in January 2024. Officially, he’d been cleared by judicial authorities to travel for medical treatment. But he never came back. Not for months. Not for years.<\/p>\n

The shadow hanging over him was grave: allegations of treason and other offenses linked to the violent attacks that shook Freetown in November 2023. For a former head of state, few accusations carry more weight or more personal cost than treason against the very country you once led.<\/p>\n

He wasn’t alone in his absence. Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who accompanied Koroma to the airport, spoke with real warmth of his “dear friend and brother” and of Nigeria serving as Koroma’s “home away from home.” But there’s a heaviness in that phrase \u2014 a reminder that a home away from home is still not home. Nigeria gave him friendship, support and solidarity. What it couldn’t give him was his own country.<\/p>\n

The path back was neither quick nor easy. Jonathan admitted that people worked “quietly” behind the scenes, pushing for dialogue and engagement with Sierra Leonean authorities to create the conditions for a safe return. It wasn’t until July 2026 \u2014 in a move framed as part of broader peace-building and national-cohesion efforts \u2014 that the government finally dropped the case.<\/p>\n

For Koroma, those two years carried a pain that no statement can fully capture: the exile from a nation he helped shape, the limbo of an unresolved treason case, the uncertainty of whether “home” would ever be open to him again.<\/p>\n

But on Friday, Vice President Mohamed Jalloh announced the return. And on Sunday, Koroma landed back on Sierra Leonean soil, faced the cameras, and said the words that must have felt impossibly far away for two years: he was “back home.”<\/p>\n

He’s signaled he’s ready to take part in consultations and hear advice as the country moves forward. Whether that marks genuine reconciliation or just the beginning of a long, difficult healing \u2014 only time in Freetown will tell.<\/p>\n

Welcome home, Mr President. After everything, the country is listening.<\/p>\n
