Nigeria and Cameroon have started a joint assessment of the Ekok-Mfum One-Stop Border Post. The goal is simple: fewer delays, tighter security, and smoother trade between the two countries.<\/p>\n

The Nigeria Customs Service announced the exercise on Wednesday in Lagos. Its theme: “Leveraging NCS Trade Modernisation to Advance Seamless Cross-Border Trade.” Customs authorities, security agencies, development partners, and community leaders all took part.<\/p>\n

Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adeniyi said the effort builds on cooperation that already exists between the two countries. But despite how close Nigeria and Cameroon are, moving people and goods across the border is still slow and expensive for traders.<\/p>\n

“We are taking something that works and asking if it can serve the region and continent,” he said.<\/p>\n

He credited the African Development Bank, ECOWAS, Afreximbank, AfCFTA, and the Economic Community of Central African States with supporting the initiative.<\/p>\n

Adeniyi also said Nigerian and Cameroonian delegations recently visited the Beitbridge Border Post between South Africa and Zimbabwe to study how joint operations and border technology work in practice. Technical teams are now finalising a joint operational agreement, expected to be signed at the upcoming C-PACT conference. That agreement would set out procedures, data exchange, and coordinated controls at Mfum-Ekok.<\/p>\n

Cameroon Customs Director-General Fongod Nuvaga called the assessment the first step toward unified border operations. He pushed for real-time data sharing and joint risk management so cargo is not checked twice for no reason.<\/p>\n

The meeting also launched the Mfum-Ekok Border Modernisation Initiative, which aims to digitise border processes, upgrade infrastructure, and bring operations in line with AfCFTA objectives.<\/p>\n
