President Bola Tinubu has directed that 95 per cent of Nigerians be enrolled for a National Identification Number (NIN) by December 2026.<\/p>\n
The President gave the order on Wednesday at the 8th National Identity Day celebration in Abuja. He was represented at the event by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.<\/p>\n
Tinubu said the Federal Government is building the digital infrastructure needed to use Nigeria’s identity system to grow the economy. He said the theme of this year’s celebration focused on linking the country’s digital ecosystem with its digital economy and wider economic development.<\/p>\n
“Nigeria’s digital ecosystem must power Nigeria’s digital economy, and Nigeria’s digital economy must help power Africa’s economy. Our identity infrastructure will be a critical component of this ambition,” he said.<\/p>\n
The President said the government wants a system where a secure ID can be used for online business, banking, welfare payments, healthcare, school and transport services.<\/p>\n
He added that work is being sped up on a secure national system to protect online documents, signatures and transactions. According to him, the plan will make it possible to sign documents online safely, confirm that government documents are genuine, and keep online payments and government messages secure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
