The next day, they were all found<\/span>. <\/span>Dead:<\/strong> They claim they placed them in a holding facility and found them dead the following morning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Claims:<\/strong> Officials suggested causes like suffocation, overcrowding, or disease. Families and witnesses accused officers of foul play, overcrowding, and extortion\u00a0 to all 37 young Nigerians. Hmmm,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On 15 September 2026, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State arrested 37 able-bodied young men. Their crime? Scavenging for scraps of the natural minerals buried beneath the land<\/p>\n

By 17 September, all 37 were declared dead in NSCDC custody, Two days. Thirty-seven lives.<\/p>\n

Let us be clear about what this means. These were not terrorists. They were not armed robbers. They were young men digging in the ground of the only place they could call home, looking for a way to survive.<\/p>\n

And ask the harder question: why were they there at all?<\/p>\n

If our leaders had done what they were elected to do \u2014 if the wealth drawn from our mineral-rich land had been reinvested into industries, into jobs, into real opportunity \u2014 these 37 men would have been in factories, on farms, in workshops. They would have been producing. Building. Contributing. Instead, they were arrested for the offence of being poor in a country that is not.<\/p>\n

Now compare that to the other story.<\/p>\n

We have arrested terrorists and jihadists \u2014 men who kidnapped, who raped our daughters, who killed our people, who posted their atrocities on social media for the world to see. And what did they receive? VIP treatment in rehabilitation centres. Public declarations of repentance. Reintegration into the very society they terrorised. Monthly salaries higher than the national minimum wage. Some have been recruited into national security.<\/p>\n

So let us weigh it plainly:<\/p>\n

A young man scavenging for minerals in his own homeland: dead in custody within 48 hours.
\nA terrorist who has taken lives: rehabilitated, paid, and given a government job.
\nThis is not justice. This is not even the pretence of justice. This is a state that has declared war on its own children while rolling out the red carpet for its destroyers.<\/p>\n

Nigeria under APC has become a place where the poor are punished for surviving and the violent are rewarded for repenting. If hell had a government, it would look at ours and take notes.<\/p>\n

If the revenue from our mineral resources were invested where it belongs \u2014 in industries, in jobs, in opportunity \u2014 these men would not have needed to. They would have been working. Producing. Living.<\/p>\n

Compare this to how the state treats those who have done far worse. Kidnappers, killers, rapists \u2014 some of whom broadcast their crimes online \u2014 have been placed in rehabilitation programmes, declared repentant, reintegrated into society on monthly stipends above the national minimum wage, and in some cases recruited into national security agencies.<\/p>\n

One group is punished for surviving. The other is rewarded for repenting. That is the contradiction at the heart of governance in this country, and it cannot hold forever.<\/p>\n
