{"id":1322,"date":"2024-06-25T12:08:57","date_gmt":"2024-06-25T12:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/?p=1322"},"modified":"2024-06-25T12:12:38","modified_gmt":"2024-06-25T12:12:38","slug":"insecurity-southwest-govs-insist-on-state-police-a-way-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/2024\/06\/25\/insecurity-southwest-govs-insist-on-state-police-a-way-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"Insecurity: Southwest Govs Insist On State Police, a Way Forward \u2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<header id=\"mvp-post-head\" class=\"left relative\">\n<h1 id=\"mvp-post-title\" class=\"mvp-post-title left entry-title\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Governors of the southern region of the country, have maintained their stand on the need for the creation of state police.<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"mvp-post-main-out left relative\">\n<div class=\"mvp-post-main-in\">\n<div id=\"mvp-post-content\" class=\"left relative\">\n<div id=\"mvp-content-wrap\" class=\"left relative\">\n<div class=\"mvp-post-soc-out right relative\">\n<div class=\"mvp-post-soc-in\">\n<div id=\"mvp-content-body\" class=\"left relative\">\n<div id=\"mvp-content-body-top\" class=\"left relative\">\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\" class=\"left relative\">\n<p>The Governors, met in on 24th June in Abeokuta,<a href=\"https:\/\/ogunstate.gov.ng\/\"> Ogun State,<\/a> under the auspices of the Southern Governors Forum, reiterated the need to have control over the security architecture of their respective states as the chief security officers.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1323\" src=\"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/yu-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/yu-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/yu-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/yu-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/yu-1.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Speaking on a national television interview, the Ogun State Governor,\u00a0\u00a0Dapo Abiodun who just replaced former Ondo governor, the late Rotimi Akeredolu as the chairman of the forum, said the governors of the region are united in their call for state police.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that federal security officers deployed to various states do not understand the local terrain, language or culture of the people, and before they settle down to understand such things, they are transferred to another state, making it difficult to gather intelligence on security issues<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-19\">\n<div class=\"c-ad \">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-4577410-4\" data-google-query-id=\"CNHipZrb9oYDFQSeUAYd3IoMbg\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/18855965\/In_content3_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Abiodun stated that it is obvious that the federal police is short of manpower, but with the creation of state police, security operatives who understand the terrain will be able to complement the efforts of the federal officers in curbing insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>The Ogun Governor\u00a0said:\u00a0<em>\u201cWe all spoke with one voice in support of state policing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe spoke with one voice in support of regional security outfits which almost all regions have set up.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-20\">\n<div class=\"c-ad \">\n<div class=\"c-ad__label\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-4577410-5\" data-google-query-id=\"CNLipZrb9oYDFQSeUAYd3IoMbg\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/18855965\/In_content4_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>\u201cThe outfits are working hand in glove with the law enforcement agencies and providing them with intelligence and support.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe all know that we cannot have any meaningful development in the atmosphere of insecurity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe all spoke with one voice in support of state policing, and regional security outfits, working hand-in-glove with the security outfits.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-22\">\n<div class=\"c-ad \">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-4577410-7\" data-google-query-id=\"CNTipZrb9oYDFQSeUAYd3IoMbg\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/18855965\/Sidebar_Direct_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>\u201cThe governors are called state chief security officers. But, we know that the Commissioner of Police is appointed by the Inspector General of Police and is only answerable to the IG.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAnd when the governor needs to call the attention of the CP on an urgent task in his state, the governor will have to first clear with the IG.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat have we discovered? In most cases, a policeman from Borno, Maiduguri, posted to Lagos or Ogun states, for instance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSuch an officer doesn\u2019t understand the terrain, he doesn\u2019t speak the language and he does not get the level of intelligence he needs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBy the time he is settling down to understand these factors, he is transferred to another state.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re calling for community police to tame insecurity in the state and the nation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cUnder the state police arrangement, a policeman posted to his ward won\u2019t have problems with language and intelligence.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn that case, the policeman understands the community and the locals, language, the sentiments and, he knows the criminals within his territory.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt is also common knowledge that the federal police have a shortage of manpower.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe, as governors, are not in charge or control of our states as far as security is concerned.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYet, we fund the federal police operations, yet we are not getting the best from them.
